With the recent media hype around our paper, ‘Birds of a Feather Video Flock Together‘ published at ACM CHI, my collaborators Jennifer Cunha and Rébecca Kleinberger have received several emails from parrot owners from around the world showing photos and telling stories about their birds.
One particular email stood out — a short story from Vera Oor. Vera wrote us a short story after seeing our study in the news about parrots using the internet to date. I loved how Vera had thought about the camera angle and what parrots would make of seeing themselves on screen. With Vera’s permission, I have included the translated and original Dutch versions below for others to enjoy.

Allo allo
Rosella reacts immediately to the ringtone of a Spanish Flamengo, and in no time, she is at the iPad, which is nearby. Oh, finally, a call from the dating site.
A few weeks ago, she signed up for this, and since then, she has been anxiously awaiting whether there will be a response to her call.
Before she could be registered, it still had some feet in the earth. She had to provide a recent photo with both a front view and a side view, both full-frame and zoomed-in.
Every time she wanted to take the picture with her iPad, the image was distorted because she had to press the shutter button herself, resulting in a strange picture. She hasn’t had the iPad that long, but after some searching in the manual, she found how to take a selfie with a few seconds delay. She is very pleased with the result. Her black hair stands out perfectly against her red outfit. A real Spanish to see. She used a fan as a background for the show.
In her ‘wishes’, she indicated that she would like to date a tough Dutchman, preferably blonde.
He had to love music and dancing. Would the blonde Adonis be the one to respond now?
Full of excitement, she taps the dating site icon, and … there it is!
Wow, that seems like something at first glance. But why is the image still? She chose the icon of video calling. Oh, wait, something is happening.
“Allo, allo”, she shouts, “who do I have on the line?”.
“Yes, you speak with Lorre from the Netherlands.”
Rosella moves slightly towards the screen to get a better look at him.
“Hi Lorre, how nice of you to respond. I am Rosella, and as you can see, I am a red parrot.”
She trips back and forth on her stick and stands up straight so that her figure comes into its own. She whistles the first notes of a well-known Spanish dance and turns back and forth with flapping wings, her head with a beautiful beak in full view.
Lorre lets out an appreciative whistle and sings along to the whistled melody.
“Oh, you know Spanish music, great! What kind of parrot are you?”
“I am a blue and yellow macaw. I have registered on this site because I often sit alone during the day and need company. The cat here in the house is of no use to me at all. I am looking for a companion to whistle, talk and dance with.”
Rosella informs Lorre that she enrolled for the same reason and compliments him on his appearance. After some talking, they decide to dance. Rosella flaps her wings like castanets, and Lorre kicks the rhythm with his paws. Lorre whistles the melody, and Rosella sings the lyrics.
The contact seems to be a success.
Long live the ability to video call parrots.

Op de ringtone van een Spaanse Flamengo reageert Rosella gelijk en binnen no time is ze bij de iPad, die dichtbij staat. O eindelijk, een oproep van de datingsite. Alweer enkele weken geleden heeft ze zich hiervoor aangemeld en sindsdien zit ze vol spanning te wachten of er een reactie op haar oproep komt.
Voordat ze ingeschreven kon worden had het nog wel wat voeten in aarde. Ze moest een recente foto aanleveren met zowel een vooraanzicht en zijaanzicht, zowel helemaal in beeld als ingezoomd. Telkens als ze met haar iPad de foto wilde nemen werd het beeld verstoord omdat ze zelf op de sluiterknop moest drukken en daardoor een rare foto ontstond. De iPad heeft ze nog niet zo heel lang, maar na enig zoeken in de gebruiksaanwijzing heeft ze gevonden hoe ze een selfie kon maken met enige seconden vertraging. Ze is zelf erg tevreden over het resultaat. Haar zwarte haren steken perfect af tegen haar rode outfit. Een echte Spaanse om te zien. Voor de show heeft ze een waaier als achtergrond gebruikt.
Bij haar ‘wensen’ had ze ingegeven dat ze graag wilde daten met een stoere Hollander, liefst blond. Hij moest van muziek houden en van dansen.
Zou de blonde Adonis nu degene zijn die reageert? Vol spanning tikt ze het icoontje van de datingsite aan en …daar is-tie! Wauw, dat lijkt zo op het eerste gezicht wel iets. Maar waarom staat het beeld stil? Ze heeft toch echt het icoontje van videobellen gekozen. O wacht, er gebeurt iets.
“Allo, allo”, roept ze, “wie heb ik op de lijn?”.
“Ja je spreekt met Lorre, uit Nederland.”
Rosella beweegt zich iets naar het scherm om hem beter te kunnen zien.
“Dag Lorre, wat fijn dat je reageert. Ik ben Rosella en zoals je ziet ben ik een rode papegaai.”
Ze trippelt wat over haar stokje heen en weer en gaat rechtop staan zodat haar figuur het best tot zijn recht komt. Ze fluit de eerste tonen van een bekende Spaanse dans en draait heen en weer met flapperende vleugels, haar kop met prachtige snavel vol in beeld.
Lorre laat een waarderend gefluit horen en zingt enkele woorden mee op de gefloten melodie.
“O, je kent de Spaanse muziek, geweldig! Wat voor papegaai ben je?”
“Ik ben een blauw-gele ara”, en hij draait een rondje zodat ze hem goed kan zien.
“Ik heb me ingeschreven op deze site omdat ik overdag vaak alleen zit en behoefte heb aan gezelschap. Aan de kat hier in huis, heb ik helemaal niks. Ik zoek een soortgenoot om mee te fluiten, te praten en te dansen.”
Rosella laat Lorre weten dat ze zich om dezelfde reden heeft ingeschreven en complimenteert hem met zijn uiterlijk. Na enig gepraat besluiten ze een dansje te wagen. Rosella flappert met haar vleugels alsof het castagnetten zijn en Lorre trappelt het ritme mee met zijn pootjes. Lorre fluit de melodie en Rosella zingt de tekst.
Het contact lijkt een succes te kunnen worden.
Lang leve de mogelijkheid om papegaaien te laten videobellen.
